traditional refectory table in local, sustainable sweet chestnut
Project by Tim Germain
Year: 2022
Cost: £5,750
this extra-wide 8’x5′ refectory table is a bit more traditional than my usual style but is made from coppiced sweet chestnut from Woodley Wood in Tattingstonethe pegged through-tenons were a staple of the Arts & Crafts movementthe top is finished with grooving to highlight the fact that the boards are the width that nature intended, with extra detailing on the edge as a flourishthe beauty of the local, sustainable sweet chestnut is in the pronounced grain, the natural greenish marbling, some brown fungus….. and a mousehole of a knot!
